Masjid An-Nabawi

Masjid an-Nabwi is the second largest Mosque in the world. It was the second Mosque built by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) after Masjid Quba. It is the second holiest site in Islam and is present in the city of Madinah in Al Madinah province of Saudi Arabia. It is one of the most visited places by Muslims from all over the world. Masjid an-Nabwi is generally visited by every Muslim who goes to Saudi Arabia for Umrah and Hajj.

The land on which now Majid an-Nabwi resides belonged to two young orphans, namely Sahl and Suhayl. When the two orphans found out that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) wanted to acquire their land in order to erect a mosque, they willingly went to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and offered him the land as a gift. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) insisted that a price should be paid to the boys, and it was aid by Aby Ayyub al-Ansari.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself took part in the construction of the Mosque. Originally, the Masjid an-Nabqi was an open-air building that served as a religious school, a community center, and a court of law. There was a raised minbar for Prophet Muhammad to give the Friday sermon and for the people who taught Quran there. Afterward, Islamic rulers greatly expanded the Mosque.

During the reign of Ummayyad caliph Al-Walid I, it incorporated one of the most significant expansions. It became the final resting place of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the two caliphs, Abu Bakr and Umar. The most notable feature of the Masjid an-Nabwi is the green dome, which is present in the south-eastern corner of the Mosque. This part was originally the house of Aisha, Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) third wife. Today, it lies in the heart of Madinah and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Islam.

The modern-day Mosque is in a rectangular plot and is two stories tall. The Ottoman Prayer Hall is the oldest part of the Masjid an-Nabwi. The Mosque has a flat paved roof with 27 sliding domes on square bases. The sliding roof is closed during Dhuhr prayer to protect the visitors. The Rawdah ash-Sharifah is the area between the burial chamber of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and the Minbar, and it is regarded as one of the Riyad al-Jannah, “Gardens of Paradise.”
